The Procrastinator’s Guide to Modernism Week

Sometimes is pays to wait until the last minute.

Let’s face it.  Some of us aren’t planners.  If it’s just occurred to you that you really want to check out Modernism Week, we’d like to officially encourage you to do so.  With over 250 events planned over the ten day celebration, there are still tickets available.  Here’s a handy round-up of things to do and places to go for the last minute traveler.



Whether you’re coming into town for weekend one or weekend two, there are still tickets available for tours.

Saturday, February 13 – Eichler Day
Start at CAMP with a conversation with Eichler experts before watching a screening of “People in Glass Houses: The Legacy of Joseph Eichler,” before heading to the Desert Eichler, the first of several modernized Eichlers to be built in the Coachella Valley, soon to be part of an new Eichler neighborhood in South Palm Springs.

Sunday, February 14 – El Rancho Vista Estates Home Tour
Their is nothing more romantic than exploring beautiful midcentury homes on Valentines Day.  It’s not too late to score a spot on this neighborhood tour which takes guests inside some perfectly preserved midcentury originals.  The neighborhood, which was recently featured in Atomic Ranch, was developed by Roy Fey in 1959-60 and features 70 homes designed by Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison, plus another 20 ranch homes. Tour the interiors then stay for a reception including wine and light hors d’oeuvres.

Saturday, February 20 – Modernism Week Show House 2016
Hop on a self-guided tour of the gorgeously appointed, all-star designer showcase. Beautiful, luxurious interiors that exemplify the Palm Springs lifestyle. Get a sneak peek of the 2016 home here.

Saturday, February 13 – East Coast vs. West Coast Modernism
Architects Andre Kikoski and Michael Lehrer take the stage at CAMP to talk about the how modernism has evolved over the last century on both coasts, presented by Ferguson as part of their annual Design Insights series.

Sunday, February 14 – Hollywood Designs Presented by WestEdge Design Fair
Real talk with some of Hollywood set designers and an insider’s perspective on how they create the shows we all love.

Sunday, February 14 – ELLE DECOR Presents the Iconic Iconoclast Vladimir Kagan
ELLE DECOR Editor in Chief Michael Boodro speaks to legendary furniture designer Vladimir Kagan about his life’s work, followed by a book signing.

Saturday, February 20 – Lisa Perry: Off the Runway
Don’t miss fashion icon Lisa Perry as she talks about how she merges art, design, and fashion in her work.

Saturday, February 13 – World Premiere of “Desert Maverick: The Singular Architecture of William F. Cody”
Catch the world premiere of this documentary at the Annenberg Theater, featuring Julius Shulman’s classic photography and interviews with historians, authors, and Winilyn Brady Cody.

Monday, February 15 – “William Krisel, Architect” – Premier Screening of Re-mastered Film
This documentary by director Jake Gorst explores the life and work of William Krisel, including his roots in 1930s China, his ground-breaking designs for modern living and interviews with scholars, his contemporaries and family. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A and VIP reception upstairs in the Camelot Café.



Cocktail culture is an integral part of the Palm Springs lifestyle, so be sure to catch at least few parties while you’re in town for Modernism Week.

Friday, February 12 – Cocktail Party with Shag!
Celebrate the revival of Polynesian and Tiki inspired culture and businesses in Palm Springs with other preservationists and fans of modernism at the Caliente Tropics Hotel. Tipple in true tiki style!

Saturday, February 13 – Hendrick’s Cocktail Academy
Stop by CAMP on Saturday afternoon and let World Champion Mixologist and Hendrick’s Gin Ambassador, Mark Stoddard drop some serious cocktail knowledge on you.  Shake, stir, sample, and sip some midcentury cocktails and step up your entertaining game in modernist style.

Monday, February 15 – Retro Pinball Mania!
Celebrate President’s Day by playing the ultimate American game: pinball.  Explore the Museum of Pinball after hours, play all the vintage pinball machines, and enjoy a moment of pure, unadulterated play.

Saturday, February 20 – The Female Factor Cocktail Party
Watch the sun set over the mountains and enjoy cocktails poolside at this special sunset soiree celebrating the success of women in design at the most recent private residence designed and built by Palm Springs dynamic duo of developers, Thomboy Properties.
